About me
Carol Pollack-Nelson, Ph.D. is a human factors psychologist specializing in consumer product safety. She works as a consultant and researcher, providing guidance to manufacturers, retailers, attorneys, test labs, consumer groups, and the government on product safety issues including anticipation of product hazards, foreseeable use scenarios, age grading children’s toys and other articles, supervision of young children, and the design and effectiveness of warning labels and instructions. In addition to her consulting practice, Dr. Pollack-Nelson conducts independent research on consumer product safety issues and is the author of numerous peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Prior to working as an independent consultant, Dr. Pollack-Nelson served as a Senior Engineering Psychologist in the Division of Human Factors at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Dr. Pollack-Nelson is actively involved in various professional and technical societies including the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, for which she is the immediate past Chair of the Children’s Issues Technical Group (CITG). She works on the development of numerous ASTM, UL, and ANSI voluntary standards and is on ASTM International’s Board of Directors. Additionally, she is a Vice-Chair on ASTM’s Executive Committee and serves on UL’s Consumer Advisory Council. She has been an active member of the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization (ICPHSO), serving on ICPHSO’s Board from 2005-2015 and as Board President from 2013-2014.
Dr. Pollack-Nelson is the recipient of a number of safety-related awards including the A.R. Lauer Safety Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the CPSC Chairman’s Circle of Commendation Award, ASTM’s Consumer Award, and the Ross A Koeser Achievement Award from ICPHSO.
